This Week's Troubletown

With only three cartoons to go, I penned this bummer, anti-American screed. Let the snide comments roll!

Great work! Maybe we'll become aware of how big these issues really are. I don't really agree on the whole not believing in evolution as being a bad thing, but hey, I'm just opinionated I guess. Then again, I've never seen believing in evolution as being directly correlated to sustained growth and prosperity. But that's what comments are for. To discuss.

Awesome!
Americans not believing in evolution is indicative of a greater problem, the gullibility of the ignoranti who are willing to believe anything on faith. The refutation of solid science is a problem, and will be more so in the future as the oligarchs try to gut the Clean Air and Water Acts to increase profits. Wake up America, indeed!

Dangle:

I left a few times and it is a great thing. Travel. see the world. It will hearten you. Most of the world is a happy place filled with wonderful people. The fearmongers veil will be immediately removed if you go ...

besides you deserve it after the 22 years of hard thankless work you've put in.

But make it a vacay and not permanent - we need good smart people to bring this country back from the brink.

I'm asking these questions in earnest! I'd like to see thee claims sourced. I'd like to find some greater context for these figures. Is it really just young dumb 'Merica acting up again, or what?
What irks me is that the boomers had nothing to say about any of these issues as things were degrading ( some of them clearly are*.). These are the children of boomers or X-ers'; not groups of people who were concerned with maintaing a strong National character, you know?

'It's like , man, this is turning into a real bummer, Maybe we shoulda like, got involved. Aw, fuck it; I made enough durnig the last credit bubble. I'm outta here!!'

*Education/test scores are really only a minority ( Hispanic and black, that is) issue. White American students are testing better than white Canadian students, just below the highest scoring country, Finland.

You must not intend for your statements about fat people to be, yknow, factual statements, huh?

The U.S. ranks 9th, not 1st, among nations, for fat people.

Fat people in the U.S. face serious levels of discrimination on the job and elsewhere. (http://yaleruddcenter.org/what_we_do.aspx?id=10)

That guy who died? He wasn't "stuck to his chair!" (http://wtrf.com/story.cfm?func=viewstory&storyid=96934)

For someone who, I imagine, takes pride in questioning and being skeptical about all sorts of topics, you sure sound like a total tool of The Man when it comes to weight.

I invite you to consider unlearning some of that prejudice. Google Health At Every Size or get a copy of the Fat Studies Reader. Or even a copy of my book, FAT!SO?. (Given your propensity for using weight terms as slams, I doubt you'll bother.)

Your statements aren't intended to be factual, huh?

The U.S. ranks #9, not #1, for fat people.

In the U.S., fat people face profound levels of weight-based discrimination in the workplace and elsewhere.

It's not cool to use weight-based terms as slams.

I suggest you unlearn your prejudice and stop acting like a tool of The Man when it comes to weight and fat people.

@Marilyn: 9th for obesity is still pretty high, considering the number of countries in the world.

And as far as I know (I heard this on the radio), America has the highest rate of child obesity in the world.

It's also not just fat people (or overweight people/bigger people, whatever you find unoffensive :P) that are teased or discriminated against. Thin/underweight people can get the same treatment, gay people, disabled people, pretty much anyone who's different or a minority can be discriminated against, depending on the type of people they're around.

And when did anyone "use a weight-based term as a slam"? I didn't see it in the comic, or in the comments, so I don't know who/what you're referring to. :P

"That guy who died? He wasn't stuck to his chair!"
Just because one specific person who died wasn't stuck to his chair, doesn't mean that other overweight/obese people can't get stuck to chairs if the chairs are small enough. I don't know if that panel in the comic was intending to reference an actual thing, but it didn't seem that way to me. :P

China won the war against America, on the only battlefield that counts in a 'Mutual Destruction' 21st century world. China kicked America's ass soundly, left American financiers struggling to prevent depression, running U.S. dollar printing machines in overtime, closing banks, foreclosing houses repossessing cars, even screwing union workers, banning unions! China won on the world economic battlefield! They won a decisive victory this past decade, and China has even refused to give U.S. loans! China is selling off her U.S. treasuries, exchanging them for natural resources around the world as we speak.Even the position as currency for world trade held by U.S. dollar is mocked, China buys petroleum from Siberia in Yuan, opening trade with Russia in that currency. IMF calls for 'new' currency for international trade, calls on change, away from U.S. dollar, a currency no longer trusted the world over, mostly due to manipulations in favor of U.S., dishonest one at that! Look closely at Detroit City, even compared to Third World Johannesburg these days. For Shame, America!

When you say (paraphrasing) "America ranks 9th for obesity" You do realise the top most obese country is American Samoa and that before it was taken over by America the people had very little health complaints. Additionally, 34% of American adults are ranked as obese. More than 1 in every 3 people you see walking down the street in America are obese. That is a lot.

The USA is one of the most disgusting, and utterly disappointing pieces of land in the world. So many people there are just idiots and utter failures. If the statistic is right about only 39% believing in evolution then this country has to seriously get it's head out of it's ass and face the facts. Also, get on board with the metric system already. Nobody likes it, and it's less precise.

I've been to Europe. There are plenty of idiots there. And really, no one would give a shit about our domestic idiot-force if we weren't trying to police the world. We'd be just another country, full of our own kind of harmless weirdos.
Thing is, people extrapolate a direct connection between domestic ignorance and our insane foreign policy, but check it out: The guy who just got elected a couple years ago by the enlightened and educated is continuing the same policies! So we aren't being offered a real choice, but the believers on both sides take the bait, every time.
I think if we were offered decent choices ( like Ron Paul v. Kuicinich v.Some sane "moderate") people would get behind them in the same way they got behind Obama and Bush. The instinct to team up into little tribes is just too strong, belief in evolution (or whatever) or not. You've just chosen sides, just like the idiots.

Also, Dr. Dangle, though I've been a critic, I'll continue to be a fan of your cartooning.
